Things I have learned in my life so far

11 Sep

5-year reunion

I started  a semester-long design class this week at a local art school. The professor gave us this list of things artist/designer Stefan Sagmeiser claims to have learned in his life (so far). They are notes he distilled from his diary.

  • Complaining is silly. Either act or forget.
  • Thinking life will be better in the future is stupid, I have to live now.
  • Being not truthful works against me.
  • Helping other people helps me.
  • Organizing a charity group is surprisingly easy.
  • Everything I do always comes back to me.
  • Drugs feel great in the beginning and become a drag later on.
  • Over time I get used to everything and start taking it for granted.
  • Money does not make me happy.
  • Traveling alone is helpful for a new perspective on life.
  • Assuming is stifling.
  • Keeping a diary supports my personal development.
  • Trying to look good limits my life.
  • Worrying solves nothing.
  • Material luxuries are best enjoyed in small doses.
  • Having guts always works out for me.
Sagmeister took a few of the items on this list and created physical installations showcased around the world – often just on the street (and not in galleries). Check them out by watching his Ted Talk. Sagmeister has a website where you can contribute to his list and share what you’ve learned in your life so far.

What have you learned so far? Leave it in the comments.

As much as you do

“Many people need desperately to receive this message: ‘I feel and think much as you do, care about many of the things you care about, although most people do not care about them. You are not alone.'”

-Kurt Vonnegut, Timequake

Thursday: Weight or Lightness?

Ithaca, NY

“The heavier the burden, the closer our lives come to the earth, the more real and truthful they become. Conversely, the absolute absence of a burden causes man to be lighter than air, to soar into the heights, take leave of the earth and his earthly being, and become only half real, his movements as free as they are insignificant. What then shall we choose? Weight or lightness?”

-Milan Kundera, The Unbearable Lightness of Being
